The rich wild animals of the state offers hunting season nearly the entire year round for varying types of wildlife, offering good games for hunters. Games like raccoons, rabbits, quails and foxes to geese, wild turkeys, wild boards, deer and bears are the favorite among others. For 2011-2012, the list below shows the general North Carolina open season for games. The local municipalities have to be contacted for the specific date:

In order to maintain the wildlife of North Carolina, the local federal government came up with regulations for hunting. As a common constraint in hunting for bears, deer and wild boars, it is disallowed by regulation to use any kind of baits or to use prepared food in luring the animals for an easier kill. It is also not permitted to take bears in their sanctuaries or hunt cubs that are less than 50 pounds or a female bear with cub(s). Individuals that are not residents of North Carolina are expected to have a permit to hunt bears and wild boars.

Most recently, the authorities of North Carolina had adjusted their regulations relating to hunting. They have authorized the use of crossbows for hunting games and other non-game animals, as well as game birds. The crossbow must be certified. Acquiring a pistol permit to purchase a crossbow is not required anymore in the revised hunting law. The crossbow should have at least 150 pounds of draw weight for it to be allowed to be used in hunting. Blunt-type arrowheads should be used for small games and those for bears, deer, wild boar or wild turkey should be a 7/8 inch broad-head arrow. Bolts that have poison or drugs or that are barbed are not permitted.

On Sundays, it is not permitted to take birds that are migrating using a crossbow. The use of crossbows for hunting is allowed throughout archery season. The Urban Archery Season is from January 14- Feb 18, 2012. Throughout the archery season, the use of guns is not permitted. It is also illegal to use a dog to hunt throughout the archery season. For hunters who would want to use their crossbows in hunting, they should call the municipality that participated in the Urban Archery Season.
